WEB DESIGNING IDEA : How do I get new ideas for web design?

I talked about this with a designer, here is what he did. He will have look at various different websites and will collect different ideas then blend them together to make his PSD for website. What do you think about this? What do you do?

Clients never like hearing this because it is boring.
The best new idea you can have, is to look at your web site goals. What do you want to achieve?
Your goals should include providing something useful for your users at the very least.

Once you have your goals you can decide on your content. Once you have your content you can decide on your structure.

Once you have your structure you can decide on your page hierarchy, elements and user flows.

Now it should seem obvious what visual styles and fun methods will work for your web site. Take a look through other web sites, and why not buy a copy of the web designer's idea book too.

Do not think up crazy fun ways to present information, then try to make your information fit in. This is a bad idea.
